In "A Christmas Carol", Dickens presents the idea of redemption through Scrooge. Dickens allows the reader to envision a change in attitude through this charactor by highlighting his refusal to change. Soon turned into many actions, this is percieved at the beginning of the novel and this extract. This is when Marley warns Scrooge to listen to him through the quotes "I wear the chains I forged in life" and "Hear me!". The use of punctuation highlights a sence of urgency towards the situation through the exclamation mark. The order "Hear me" tells the reader that Scrooge needs to change and how Dickens uses the figure of his best friend to influnce Scrooge. Furthermore, the ghost of Marley acts as a catalyst for Scrooge's transformation. His appearance is described as terrifying, wrapped in chains that symbolise the consequences of greed and selfishness. Through this encounter, Dickens suggests that it is never too late for reedmption, a message that would have resonated deeply with his Victorian audience who valued charity and moral responsibility.
