How to Mark GCSE Combined Science Six-Mark Questions Faster

The six-mark extended response is the part of a GCSE Combined Science paper that takes the longest to mark and produces the most inconsistent results across a department. Each response is a paragraph of handwritten science — definitions, mechanisms, applied reasoning, sometimes a calculation — and the mark scheme rewards a specific combination of points hit, scientific accuracy, and quality of communication. Across a class set of 30 papers, that is hours of marking time and a real risk of drift between the first script and the last.

First, photograph each page under direct light with the script flat — angled shots from across the desk lose the faint pencil marks. Second, capture each response as its own clear page rather than four pages of script in one shot. The clearer the input, the more reliable the transcription and the marking that follows.

Setting Up Marking Criteria for AQA, Edexcel, and OCR

Combined Science is one specification but three exam boards. AQA's six-markers reward indicative content plus a level-of-response judgement. Edexcel uses a points-based scheme with a quality-of-written-communication uplift. OCR Gateway and OCR 21st Century each have their own conventions.
