How Teachers Detect AI in GCSE Politics Coursework

GCSE Politics is one of those subjects where AI tools cause real problems. Questions on democracy, the constitution, pressure groups, and political ideologies tend to invite the kind of structured, balanced, lightly-evidenced argument that ChatGPT and Claude produce by default. The output sounds plausible, follows a recognisable essay shape, and rarely contains an obvious factual error. For Politics teachers trying to assess genuine understanding, detecting AI use in GCSE Politics coursework needs a deliberate process rather than a hunch.

Why Politics Coursework Is Vulnerable to AI Use

Three things make Politics essays a natural fit for AI generation. First, the topics are well-covered online — democracy, voting systems, parliamentary sovereignty, the role of the monarch. Any large language model has been trained on tens of thousands of articles, textbooks, and revision guides on these themes. Second, mark schemes reward balance, structure, and use of "on the one hand / on the other hand" reasoning. AI is good at that scaffolding. Third, the evidence bar is low at GCSE — a couple of named examples and some basic terminology is often enough to score well.

Put those together and a student can paste a question into ChatGPT, ask for a two-sided answer with examples, and receive something that looks like a B/A grade response within seconds. Spotting it requires knowing what genuine GCSE Politics writing looks like and where AI quietly departs from it.

Warning Signs in Politics Essays

The most common tell is over-balanced reasoning that goes nowhere. A student who genuinely engages with a question on, say, whether the UK is a true democracy will lean — they will end up siding with one view, even if tentatively. AI almost always sits neatly in the middle, offering two paragraphs of "however" followed by a non-conclusion. Genuine Year 11 writing has a position, even if it is awkwardly expressed.

The second pattern is generic examples used out of context. AI tools love to reach for the same stock cases: the 2011 AV referendum, the suffragettes, Brexit, the abolition of hereditary peers. These get mentioned without dates, without specifics, and without being linked back to the question. A student who has actually studied a case study will use a specific detail; AI uses the example as a label.

The third is vocabulary that outruns the curriculum. Words like "hegemony", "majoritarian", "consociational", or "deliberative democracy" appearing in a Year 10 piece without context is a red flag. So is the phrase "it is important to note that" — a verbal tic that shows up in almost every Claude response.

A fourth is uniform paragraph length and structure. Five paragraphs of roughly equal size, each opening "Firstly", "Secondly", "Furthermore", "However", "In conclusion" is far more common in AI output than in real student work, where paragraph length varies with how much the student actually has to say.

How AI Detection Tools Work

It is worth being clear about what a detection tool can and cannot do. Reading a High Likelihood Score

A 90%+ score is strong evidence — but not proof. Treat it as the start of a professional judgment process, not the end. Re-read the essay yourself. Compare it to the student's previous classwork. Look at draft history if available. Ask the student to talk through their argument. Most of the time, a five-minute conversation about the content of the essay will tell you what the detection score suggested.

A score in the 40-70% range is more ambiguous. It might indicate light AI editing — a student who wrote a first draft and asked ChatGPT to "improve" it. Or it might indicate a fluent writer producing slightly polished work. This is exactly the space where the score is a signal to look more carefully, not a verdict.

Acting on Concerns Fairly

Treat any AI detection result as one piece of evidence among several. Combine it with your knowledge of the student, the quality of their drafts, their classroom engagement, and the specifics of the essay itself. Document what you found, including the score, the model used, and what the student said when asked about the work. Never accuse a student based on a likelihood score alone. Detection tools can produce false positives, particularly on writing from EAL students or those who write in a more formulaic style. Conversation is the real verdict.
