How Teachers Mark AQA GCSE Biology Six-Mark Questions Faster

Anyone who has taught AQA GCSE Biology knows the shape of the marking pile. Thirty scripts. Sixty multiple-choice ticks each, fine. Twenty short-answer recall questions, manageable. Then four or five six-mark extended-response questions per script — explain how the breathing rate changes during exercise, describe the process of natural selection, evaluate two methods of contraception — and the pile suddenly weighs more than every other paper combined. The AQA mark scheme for a six-mark Biology question is structured around three levels — Level 1 (1-2 marks, basic), Level 2 (3-4 marks, clear), Level 3 (5-6 marks, detailed and coherent). Reviewing the AI Marks Before They Go Back to Students

The AI does the first pass. You do the moderation. For a class of thirty Year 11s, the workflow that saves the most time looks like this: open the dashboard, sort the students by overall score, and start with the responses at the level boundaries. A response sitting on 4 marks between Level 2 and Level 3 is where your professional judgment matters most — the AI's tie-break may not match yours, and a moderation decision either way changes the student's grade boundary feedback.

For the scripts that fell clearly into Level 1 or clearly into Level 3, scan the suggested feedback and either approve it or rewrite the sentence that does not sound like something you would say to that student.
