Add the practical write-ups and the required-practical recall questions that need teacher judgment on whether the method was correctly explained. Standardisation meetings exist to address this, and most departments run them every cycle, but they are time-intensive and the consistency drifts as soon as the teachers go back to their own piles.

The honest answer is that the marking volume does not disappear — six-mark questions still need teacher moderation, A-Level extended responses still need the second read, practical write-ups still need a specialist eye. What changes is where the time goes. The first read on every script is carried by the AI. The teacher time goes into the moderation of borderline responses, into the analytical wash-up of which topics the cohort got wrong, into the reteach planning that often used to get skipped because the marking ran past the planning window.

Departments that have run one full mock cycle on the tool typically report two things: that the cohort gets feedback back faster, and that the standardisation meeting is shorter and more useful. The cycle is still hard. It is no longer the kind of hard that makes a science teacher quit.
