How to Respond Fairly When a Score Is High

If the detection score and your own reading of the work together raise a genuine concern, the first step is a brief, non-accusatory conversation with the student. Ask them to talk through their thinking: which specific artworks did they look at for this piece? What did they notice when they looked at them closely? Which particular element of an artist's work influenced the decision they made on a specific sketchbook page? A student who produced the written work authentically will be able to connect their writing to their actual process. A student who submitted AI-generated content will often struggle to provide that kind of grounded, specific detail.

This conversation should not feel like an interrogation. Frame it as a regular discussion about the student's creative process — the kind of conversation that should happen naturally in any Art classroom. If the student's responses are vague, generic, or inconsistent with what they have written, that gives you something concrete to take to the next stage.
